Pierre d'Assy (Liège, 1867 - Lyon, 1910, another source mentions 1870-1910) was one of the leading basses of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He was married to the Belgian soprano Jane Paquot (1878 or 1880 - 1952). According to the label, he was also connected with the Opéra, Paris. We hear him here on a Pre-dog, so that means the recording was made between 1907-1909. The label is badly damaged; a steel needle has carved quite a few circles on the paper there. Both arias are sung in...

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954), the much-discussed French writer (married three times, had many affairs with men and women, including her stepson. Famous mainly for the novel Gigi), she was asked in 1917 to write a ballet for the Opéra de Paris. She chose Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) to set her libretto to music. At Ravel's suggestion, it became an opera. The premiere took place in Monte Carlo in 1925, conducted by Victor de Sabata. It is extremely playful music in a palette of styles,...

Recordings of wind bands were very popular in the first decades of the last century: you see many old recordings with wind bands: the Black Diamonds Band; the Sousa Orchestra; the Garde Républicaine; the Coldstream Guards, Prince's Orchestra, to name a few.
